What is Taster courses

The taster course in medicine is for school leavers and students awaiting medical school entry to give a wide exposure to

  • Different settings in the hospital (OPD, clinics, wards, radiology, blood bank, laboratory, and theatre) and familiarize themselves with the functions of a hospital
  • Different roles of medical professional
  • Teamwork in a medical / surgical setting

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students who are contemplating medical school entry on completion or during the A/L study course

How to Apply

  • Online through Faculty of Medicine, KDU elective web page
  • The student is to register and create an account for them in the KDU-FOM elective web page and fill in the details online
  • Relevant documents to be uploaded into the same site

Documents to be uploaded

  • Bio page of passport
  • Letter by dean of medical school confirming studentship
  • Complete CV
  • Professional photo
  • Any other document relevant to the type of elective

Process after Application

  • After the application is submitted it will be reviewed by the elective committee and the status of your application will be displayed in the dashboard of your account
  • Once the application is accepted a conditional acceptance letter will be issued which is downloadable from your account dashboard
  • The payment should be done subsequently via the KDU payment gateway under “elective fees” according to the duration of the elective (e.g.two weeks USD 100)
  • Once the payment is done a confirmation letter will be issued advising you to apply for the visa

Processing time

  • 1 - 3 months

VISA

  • The elective students should obtain a business visa which is valid for 30 days and should the total duration of elective exceed the 30 days they should apply for an extension before expiry of visa. The international relation arm of KDU will assist you in this process
  • According to the regulations by the department of immigration and emigration of Sri Lanka foreign students are not allowed to be involved in educational activities on a tourist visa

Dress code

  • Smart professional wear
  • Casual wear (jeans / miniskirts etc) is not permitted
  • An identification tag issued by the hospital must be always worn

Accommodation

  • Accommodation and food can be arranged upon your request at an additional cost at the KDU hostel
  • Alternatively, students can find their own accommodation

On arrival

  • Upon arrival the student should report to the international relations arm of KDU with the copy of payment slip, passport, the original letter from dean of the student’s medical school and two photographs

Attendance

  • ·Upon reporting to the relevant department of the elective the student will be given an attendance record which should be signed by the relevant supervisor or consultant
  • The absence of the student from the elective appointment will be informed to the dean of the medical school

Refund

  • ·The student needs to inform at least 2 weeks prior to the proposed start date of elective to obtain a refund which will take 3-6 months. A processing fee will be retained by KDU
  • Cancellations less than two weeks of the proposed start date will not be eligible for a refund
  • There will be no refund if the appointment had to be terminated due to any disciplinary action against the student
