Objectives and outcomes of clinical elective

    • The clinical elective programme will give students from foreign medical schools an opportunity to familiarize with the clinical setup and patients of the Sri Lankan curative health sector.
    • They will also be exposed to tropical medicine in a centre of excellence

Eligibility criteria

      • Medical students studying in foreign medical schools
      • The medical students should have a minimum of 1 year of clinical experience and should have completed 2nd MBBS or equivalent

Documents to be produced by the students

    • Letter by the dean of medical school confirming their studentship and completion of 2nd MBBS
    • Complete CV

Time of the year to apply

    • Throughout the year

    • At the discretion of head of department

Duration of clinical attachment

    • Maximum number of disciplines- two(from medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics,paediatrics,psychiatry)
    • Maximum duration of the total attachment 8 weeks, minimum 4 weeks

Fees

    • USD 50/week

Letter awarded at the end

    • A letter will be given stating the successful completion of elective attachment(name of attachment and duration),description of clinical exposure during the attachment

Objectives and outcomes of clinical elective

    • The public health attachment is a practical appointment which would give an exposure to the preventive sector functions. It would focus on providing work-setting based education for the undergraduates. It will be an appointment equivalent to clinical appointments at the hospital in medical education principles. They will gain insight into the preventive healthcare system in Sri Lanka, Epidemiology, Family Health Bureau and the MoH system. Mini,FHB,MOH

Eligibility criteria

    • Medical students studying in foreign medical schools
    • The Medical students should have completed 2ndMBBS or equivalent / enrolled in a Public Health(PH) relevant field (This would be decided case by case )

Documents to be produced by the students

    • Letter by the dean of medical school confirming their studentship and completion of 2nd MBBS
    • Complete CV

    • Throughout the year

    • 5 slots per year

Duration of clinical attachment

    • minimum duration 1 week
    • maximum  duration 2 weeks

Fees

    • USD 50 per week

Letter given at the end

    • A letter stating the duration and the areas covered during the attachment will be given at the end of successful completion

Objectives and outcome of research elective

  • Accomplish aims of the research project (this may not necessarily be possible due to various limitations)
  • Prepare a report of at least 4-5 pages (with a brief introduction <1 page, what was accomplished /results and a discussion section analyzing all that was accomplished including problems that were faced.) 

Eligibility criteria

    • Medical student of a foreign university (2ndyear onwards)
    • Research experience is not necessary, but they must have a good idea of the type of work they want to do and a short proposal must be submitted and approved by the “Electives Committee” 
    • ERC approval letter for the research project (to be obtained before arrival)

Any documents needed to be produced by the students

  • letter from university/medical school supporting the students time away for that specific time (Eg. 3 months from XX.05.2022 to XX.08.2022)
  • CV highlighting any research experience and why they are interested in this experience.

  • Throughout the year, provided the KDU supervisor is willing to take the student

Duration of research attachment –

  • Minimum 1 month and maximum 1 year with special permission. 

Fees

  • USD 50/wk ($200 per month) + consumables cost based on the final budget as discussed with Sri Lankan supervisor

  • A letter stating the duration and the research areas covered during the attachment will be given at the end of successful completion

    • Gross anatomy- – Interactive cadaveric dissection based- Upper limb, lower limb, thorax, abdomen, head, and neck – Duration 5 weeks
    • Clinical neuroanatomy- The spinal cord, brain stem and cranial nerves, The blood supply to the brain, Cerebrum, and ventricles, Major fibres and basal ganglia, cerebellum, eye and ear- Duration 5 weeks
    • Cadaver preservation techniques for human anatomy teaching and research- Hands on practical and theory in body preservation techniques – Duration 5 weeks

Objectives and outcome
  • The taster course in medicine is for school leavers and students awaiting medical school entry to give a wide exposure to different settings in the hospital (OPD, clinics, wards, radiology, blood bank, laboratory, and theatre) and familiarize themselves with the functions of a hospital.
