Welcome to the official website of the Ethics Review Committee (ERC) of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).
About ERC
The Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, KDU was established in 2012 with the aim of facilitating research involving human subjects and to ensure the rights and welfare of human subjects are protected during their participation. General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University upholds the highest standards in the ethical conduct of research, including the protection of human participants, while enabling its faculty, staff and students to conduct research in a timely and efficient manner. The primary task of KDUFOM-ERC is to facilitate those objectives by reviewing, approving, modifying or disapproving research protocols submitted by researchers. KDUFOM-ERC strives to create a culture of respect for, and awareness of the rights and welfare of human research participants, while advancing knowledge and facilitating the highest quality research. KDUFOM-ERC is a member of the Forum of Ethics Review Committees of Sri Lanka (FERCSL).

Please read this section carefully to ensure that your application and the relevant documents are correctly prepared.
Who can apply?
- A member of the permanent academic staff of KDU (including probationary staff)
- Undergraduate and postgraduate students of KDU
- Trainees of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) trained under the supervision of a permanent academic member of KDU
- The staff of the military Hospitals
What type of research?
All biomedical research involving human and animal subjects must receive approval from the ERC. Therefore, if your research meets the definitions of both research and human/animal subjects, you must complete the ERC process.
Research projects of the following types are considered:
- Biomedical research involving human participants of their specimens or data
- Health-related research involving communities or healthcare systems, including health policy research
- Animals research that is conducted to study questions that are relevant to human health
Submit your application
One hard copy of all aforementioned documents needs to be submitted in separate file. The hard copy must be bound and printed on both sides of the paper
Soft copies of all documents should be submitted in a compressed folder (zip/rar) AND should be emailed to ethicsreviewcommittee.fom@kdu.ac.lk
One blinded soft copy (without the investigators information) of the proposal also need to be submitted
The above documents should ONLY be handed over to the Secretarial Assistant, Ethics Review Committee, FOM, KDU, after placing your signature in the logbook.
Submission of the documents and collection of amendments/approval letters should ONLY be done by one of the investigators of the study/ representative.
Application process
The ERC-FOMKDU will be held on the last Thursday of the month.
Letter indicating the decision of the ERC can be collected from the Secretarial Assistant, Ethics Review Committee, FOM, KDU.
Deadline
The deadline for submission is the 10th of each month for a new protocol and for a re-submission.
The above documents should ONLY be handed over to the Secretarial Assistant, Ethics Review Committee, FOM, KDU after placing your signature in the logbook.

- Enter your National ID number in the Pay Online interface and click search button
- Enter the details and select the FOM Ethics Review Committee for the Fee type
- Click Submit
- Keep the slip and send us
